Flight of Icarus

Site Specific Installation - St. Peter's Church at Citicorp NYC

Fabricated at Papermaking Studio of Kathleen Dinan, New Rochelle, NY, my friend and co-conspirator.

Five panels of handmade paper, four 2'x5', one 2'x2' ("Preparation" is the panel shown here), embedded with elements such as photographs, text, gold pigment, polyurethane and cabochons.  Each panel is accompanied by a narrative.

From these handmade paper pieces, large scale individual photos were taken to show the richness of what's contained in each panel.  Photographs shown are details from the panels that are available separately or grouped together, approximately 20"x30". Below are observations from the last panel:

                                         Flight:

As Icarus ascended he saw brilliant jewel-shaped planets.  He had grown accustomed to his environment now and his life was full of light.  Why even the sun seemed closer!   Words that would appear in another millennium were known to him now: The future Stephen Crane whispered to him:

"I saw a man pursuing the horizon."  "You can never," I said.  "You lie," he cried and ran on.

"We'll just see about that," thought Icarus as he soared ever higher into the light.
